This is the hardcover 1872 first printing of Mortimer Collins’ The British Birds. A Communication from the Ghost of Aristophanes (75 numbered pages), published by The Publishing Company, Limited (London).
The cover (app. 7.75″ x 10.25″), reddish/brown cloth with gold lettering and black decorations, has bumped outside corners, scuffs and small stains front and back, and a tear (about 2″) along the top back edge of the spine, which is securely connected to the inside. The gilt lettering and black key designs are legible and with little fade.
The blue front inside cover has a few ink lines and a name, in ink, written at the top. The blue has been rubbed off in two small spots. There are a few pencil notations to the blank left page in the title spread. These are the only writings in the book.
There are no stamps or other attachments. There is moderate foxing to some end pages, and occasional spot or other small stains to the body pages. Most have no notable stains, and none have prominent stains.
The binding is secure, with no loose or missing pages. There is a shallow bump to all outside bottom page edges, but no tears or other creases. The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the book conditions.
