This is number 80 of a limited, 200-copy Tériade (Paris) 1962 french language publication of Hesiode’s Les Travaux et Les Jours (Works and Days). This poem, by one of the earliest (circa 750-650 B.C.) Greek poets, Hesiode, has, as a principle theme, the concept of labor as an integral, worthwhile and necessary part of the human condition. The French translation used in this edition is that of Bergougnan. There are 4 color and 19 black and white etchings, each with its original tissue guard (these have been removed for the photos) in place. These reproductions of Jacques Villon art were produced by two different studios. The fifteen double page etchings, plus the frontispiece, were printed by Crommelynck. The seven single page illustrations were printed by Leblanc.
This is in its original slipcase, which has light scuffs and one spot stain, but no prominent stains, no tears or like flaws. The loose cover (290 x 385 mm) is in very good condition, with no significant flaws. The gilt lettering and light brown backing are clean and unfaded. There are no tears, stains, or other substantial flaws.
The pages, with all text printed by Imprimerie Nationale, are near fine. There are no tears or like damage. There are a few foxed areas, to the tissue guards and backs of the art, but no stains to any live art areas or text. There are no stamps or other extraneous attachments. The only writings are the copy number and, to one etching, the artist’s signature. All the art is present and in fine condition. The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of art and other the book conditions. This is a excellent example of this rare and finely produced edition.
