This is copy #90 of 200 copies (out of 300) printed on T. Edmonds Creme laid, of six D. H. Lawrence poems, grouped under the title “Tortoises”, hand bound at the bindery of the Gray Parrot.
First published in 1921, this slightly revised edition, introduced by Jefferson Hunter, and embellished with woodcuts by Alan James Robinson, was published by the Cheloniidæ Press in 1983. The cover (app. 8.125″ x 11.25″), quarter-vellum with light brown paper surfaced boards, is in good condition, with handling scuffs but no substantial stains, a shallow tear to the upper front outside corner, but no other tears, and a slight slant to the spine, which is securely connected to the inside, and on which the gilt title lettering is in fine condition.
The inside is in fine condition. There are no stamps or other attachments. The only writings are the copy number and the illustrator’s signature. There are no page tears or creases. The binding is tight, with no loose or missing pages. All the woodcuts and all text are as new
