The Works of Peter Pindar | Peter Pindar (John Wolcot)

$225.00

Peter Pindar, pseudonym of John Wolcot  (9 May 1738, — 14 January 1819), English satirist whose verse covered society, politics, and personalities.

After studying medicine at Aberdeen, Scotland, Wolcot went to Jamaica as physician to the governor in 1767. He was ordained in 1769 but then forsook the church. He returned to England in 1772 and practiced medicine in Cornwall until he settled in London in 1781. Despite blindness, he continued to write to the end of his life, producing more than 70 satirical works and some other poems. He was buried, at his own request, “close to the author of Hudibras,” the 17th-century satirist Samuel Butler, in St. Paul’s Covent Garden, London.

This handsome first edition set was published during his lifetime.

.........................

This is the complete Works of Peter Pindar (John Wolcot), originally envisaged as a three volume set, but eventually expanded to five volumes, the first three being published in 1794, the fourth in 1796, and the fifth in 1801.

The painted calf covers (8.625″ x 5.5″) are in good condition, with some dryness and surface wear at the spine, but with little fade to the gilt – five flat bands, four radiating circles, volume numbers in circles and titles in black squares – and with all spines straight. There is edge wear and light scuffing, but no significant tears or stains. The painted calf, to each front and back, has scuffs, but little fade and no prominent flaws.

The only illustration is a frontispiece portrait of Wolcot in Volume I. This is in very good condition. There are no stamps or other attachments. I’ve found no ink or other indelible notations. The bindings are tight throughout all five volumes (444, 487, 423, 500 and 466 numbered pages, with additional indices at the end of each volume), with no loose or missing pages. There are few stains, most of these being darkened borders to the blank end pages. There are few creases and no notable tears.

The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the book conditions.
