This is the two volume (317 & 326 pages) Kegan Paul, Trench & Co. 1887 printing of “The Poetical Works of John Milton, printed by Clark in Edinburgh, and recovered by Wanamaker, as indicated by their stamp to the top of an otherwise blank end page.
The covers (app. 4″ x 6.25″), red leather with gold lettering on spines that have 5 raised bands, have secure attachments at the spines, but they have areas of missing material at the bases of their spines (see photos). There is surface cracking at the sides of the spine, but no weakness to the hinges. The covers have no notable stains or color fade.
The insides are very good overall, their main flaws being recurrent light stains, most to the page borders (see photo). The bindings are tight, with no loose or missing pages. There are no page tears or significant creases.
All the text is clearly legible. There are no stamps or other attachments. There are a few pencil notations to the blank end pages, but none to the bodies. There are no ink or other indelible writings.
The accompanying photos are of this set.
