This is the two-volume Chapman and Hall 1843 first edition of Thackeray’s The Irish Sketch-Book, written under the nom de plume Mr. M. A. Titmarsh. This set is from the library of the noted bibliophile and Thackeray collector, Alain de Suzannet, as indicated by his bookplate (the only attachments) to the inside front cover of each volume (see photo).
There is no writing. The first pages of each volume are foxed – moreso to Volume I, in which the frontispiece is heavily foxed (see photo). There is recurrent staining in both, but most page faces are unstained.
The green covers are scuffed, bumped to the outside corners, and with shallow wear to the ends of the spines, which are straight, and on which the gilt lettering, slightly faded, is clearly legible. The bindings are in good condition, with no loose or missing pages.
The accompanying photos show the covers and the range of page conditions.
