This is a group, published by George Allen (Kent), and copyright dated 1884 through 1886, of 5 John Ruskin books, “Sesame and Lillies” (one volume, 180 pages), “Stones of Venice” (two volumes, 360 + 299 pages), “Modern Painters” (two volumes, 360 + 248 pages), elegantly bound, with black leather spines which have 5 raised bands, debossed design details, and gold lettering, black leather outside corners, purplish blue cloth boards.
There are scuffs to the leather, including a few spots of lost surface material, but these are few. The leather is otherwise in excellent condition, with no significant stains. The spines are straight and securely attached. There is no looseness to any hinges. There are light scuffs to the boards, but no notable stains or color loss.
Each volume has the ex libris of Frank Austin Ellis Ashwell on the marbled inside cover spreads. Two volumes have gift notations, dated 1886, on otherwise blank front end pages. There are no other notations or attachments. The end pages have light foxing, but the text pages, throughout the five volumes, are clean, with no stains, and no fade to any lettering or illustrations. The page edges, marbled all around, are in fine condition.
