This is a beautiful 2 volume (264 + 191 pp.) first state set of the 1733-1737 John Pine publication of the works of Horace “Quinti Horatii Flacci Opera”, housed in light brown leather false cover cases, which open at the middle. The fronts and back of these cases have debossed frames, detailed with floral corners.
The cover spines have six raised bands, extensive gilt ornamentation, and gilt lettering. There are light scuffs, with spots of missing surface material, but no notable stains, significant tears, or looseness at the corners. The books themselves are exceptional, with crushed red leather covers (9.25″ x 6″), extensively decorated with double gilt borders to the boards, gilt detailed on the front and back cover edges, six raised bands to the spines, and gilt decoration and lettering to the compartments, all of which is bright and clean. The spines are straight and securely connected. The inside cover spreads are green silk, with gilt inside cover borders. The page edges, gilt all around, are as new. There are no stamps or other attachments in either volume.
There are a few (erasable) pencil notations to blank end pages, but none elsewhere, and no ink or other indelible marks anywhere. The binding is tight throughout, with no loose or missing pages. There are recurrent foxed spots, all of which are small and light. There are no significant stains, and no stains of any kind to most pages. All the illustrations and lettering are as new.
The accompanying photos are of this set.
