This is the P. G. Le Mercier and Ch. Saillant 1766 publication of M. l’ Abbé Poncelet’s La Nature dans la formation du Tonnerre, et la reproduction des Êtres Vivans (divided into two parts of 172 and 148 pages, with a Table des Matière at the end of each section).
The brown leather cover (app. 4.5″ x 7″), with 5 raised bands and gilt decoration to the spine, is moderately worn, with scuffs front and back, fade to the gilt and lettering, cracks to the top and bottom of the hinges, particularly at the front, but with front and back covers attached.
The marbled inside cover spreads are clean and unfaded, but with the ex libris stamp of Bachevillier du Comier to the front inside cover. The only other extraneous elements are the ink stamp of Geo. Brush, M. D., of Sayville, NY, on the title page, and brief notations, in ink, at the top border of thee front end pages. The frontispiece is unfaded (see photo). The two other illustrations have some stains, particularly at the top of the multi-panel art, but the art itself is unfaded and with only small stains (see photos). There are recurrent stains in the book, but most pages have no notable stains. The text is unfaded and clearly legible throughout. The binding is secure, with no loose or missing pages.
