This is a rare if not unique single volume edition of “The Complete Novels of Jane Austen”, most likely the Random House single volume (5.625″ x 8.25″ x 2″) collection of the same title and page count (1364), but with no indication of that, excepting the above information and the notice “printed in U.S.A”. to an otherwise blank front end page.
This has been recovered by the George Bayntun bindery, Bath, England, as confirmed by a rarely used title page credit. The full leather cover, green with double lined gilt frame front and back, brown with two raised bands and extensive gilt work on the spine, is clean and unfaded, with surface wear to the hinges, which are securely attached. The gilt lettering and decoration to the spine, which is straight, are effectively in new condition, with no notable wear.
The wrap-around (23.5 carat gold) decorative inside front cover borders have, at the lower inside corner, the name INMAN, a reference to the New York City book dealer (Messrs. Maurice Inman) that was a regular Bayntun client. The patterned inside cover spreads and the Jane Austen frontispiece (by her sister Cassandra) are the only other illustrative elements in the book.
There are no stamps or other attachments. There is no writing. The binding is tight throughout, with no loose or missing pages. There are no page tears or creases. The gilt page tops have surface scuffs, but no stains and little fade.
The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of this book’s conditions.
