Jackson Pollock 1951 | Catalogue and Poster

$4,500.00

This is a rare set of the catalogue and poster from 1951 Jackson Pollock’s solo show at the influential Betty Parsons Gallery where he debuted the black paintings.

Alfonso Ossorio, who wrote the introduction, acknowledged that the new works asked a lot of the viewer, but also argued that greater attentiveness would be met with a fuller understanding of the artist:

[The paintings] demand of the viewer an alertness and a total involvement… Without the intricacy of color and surface pattern characteristic of his less immediately figurative work, they are filled with the same combination of strength, sensitivity, and exultant acceptance. Remote from anecdote or propaganda, stripped of immediate material appeal, they reawaken in us the sense of personal struggle and its collective roots …

.........................

This sale is for two pieces from the 1951 Jackson Pollock exhibit at Betty Parsons’ Gallery: the (8.5″ x 11″) catalogue, in very good overall condition, with sunning to the cover borders, slight curl to the lower outside corners, and occasional surface scuffs, but no prominent stains, no tears, and no notable fade to any art or text, and the accompanying (17″ x 22″) two-sided poster, with the sale particulars in text on one side and Jackson Pollock art, signed in the plate, on the other side.

This is also in very good condition, with one shallow (half-inch) tear to the edge, and with creases along the original fold lines, but with only light scuffs, no other tears, and no fade to the lettering or art.

The accompanying photos are of these two pieces.
