.........................
This the first printing (with the errata section on page xxiv) of the first edition of Georges-Marie Butel-Dumont’s Histoire et Commerce des Colonies Angloises dans l’Amérique Septentrionale (336 body pages, plus xxiv page avertissement and content sections).
The full leather cover (app. 6.75″ x 4″) has surface scuffs, shallow edge wear, and splits at the top hinges, but it is structurally sound, with secure front and back covers, and no appreciable material loss. The spine, with 5 raised bands and extensive gilt decoration and lettering, also has surface scuffs, but is very good overall, with little fade to the gilt (see photo).
The inside is in exceptionally good condition. The only attachment is an excerpted review, glued to a front page. The only writings are pencil notes to that same page and the inscription on the title page, that inscription being the most intriguing aspect of this copy (see photo).
Was this Dumont’s copy? a copy he gave to Monelbard? or is there another explanation? The lettering throughout the book is unfaded and clearly legible. The binding is tight, with no loose or missing pages. There are few creases, all shallow ones to the upper outside corners. There are two pinholes to the last two pages, but no other tears or similar flaws.
The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of this copy’s conditions.
