.........................
This is the 8 volume (416, 365, 417, 419, 434, 414, 386 & 423 pages) Histoire de la rivalité de la France et de l’Espagne, written by G. H. Gaillard, published in Paris by Chez Lavillete et Compagnie in 1801 (with all volumes dated as such).
These small (app. 4″ x 6.5″) hardcover volumes, with pebble-patterned paper surfaced covers, are in good overall condition, with wear to the ends of the spines, which are straight or almost so, and securely connected to the insides, and with all text, gilt in red backgrounds for the titles, gilt in the basic background for the volume numbers, clearly legible.
One volume (VI) has stains to its back cover, most of which is clean. Most outside corners are bumped, and there is shallow edge wear to several spots, but all covers are solidly attached. The front inside cover spreads have various numbers, apparently prices. I believe this is the only writing in the books.
There are no stamps or other attachments. The internal bindings are tight, with no loose or missing pages. There is foxing to many pages, most of it light, but no text is faded or obscured. There is slight mustiness, but no signs of mold or the like. There are no page tears. There are recurrent creases, most of which are shallow corner creases. Most pages have none.
The accompanying photos are of this copy.
