This is a rare complete 3-volume first edition of M. l’Abbé ma-Geoghegan’s “Histoire de l’ Irlande Ancienne et Moderne”. The first and second volumes were printed by Antoine Boudet (Paris) in 1758 and 1762. The third volume was printed in Amsterdam in 1763.
Volume I (488 pages) has the original three fold-out maps, in very good condition, with no notable stains, tears or fade. Volumes II + III (with continuous pagination, 376/798) have 3 more fold-out maps, with a notable stain to the top of the second map in Volume II (see photo), but with no looseness to the attachments, no tears, no fade to the art. The map in Volume III (Royaume d’ Irlande) is in several colors.
The covers (app. 8.125″ x 10.25) are worn to the leather spines, all of which have cracks to the full lengths of the front hinges, and shorter cracks to the back hinges. All covers are attached, but those attachments are weak. The spines, with five raised bands and gilt lettering and design, are dry, with missing pieces to the lettering in Volume I (see photo).
The marbled boards and leather outside corners are scuffed, but with no prominent stains. The insides are in very good condition overall, but there are stains to the inside cover spreads, recurrent foxed and spot stains to pages in all volumes, and a notable large stain to the top halves of pages in Volume II. None of the text is faded. All of it is clearly legible, as are the maps.
There are a small number of margin notes, in pencil, but I believe none in ink or other indelible marks. There are no stamps or like attachments. The bindings are secure throughout, with no loose or missing pages. I’ve found no page tears.
There are several upper outside corner creases, apparently page holders, but none of these are torn. The first volume begins (III-VIII) with a dedication aux Troupes Irlandoises au Service de la France, followed by an introduction and summary (IX-XLVIII). There is a two page errata at the end of that volume. Volume II begins with an extensive (III-LXI) Avant-propos. Volume III begins with a brief (III-XI) Sommaire, followed by a one page Errata.
