This is the 17th volume (HAL-HYV) of the Chez Pellet 1778 Nouvelle Édition of Diderot and D’Alembert’s “Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire Raisonné des Sciences, des Arts et des Métiers”, with all text in french.
The cover (app. 10.25″ x 8″) is the original calf, with a surface burn to the back cover (see photo), wear to the ends of the spine (repaired at the top) and fade to the gilt lettering and decoration. However, it is securely attached and in good overall condition.
The spine, with five raised bands, is straight. The lettering, though faded, is legible. The inside (1029 numbered pages)is very good. The marbled inside cover spreads are clean and unfaded, with no stamps or other attachments there or elsewhere. The first ten or so pages have an outside edge stain which penetrates to about a quarter inch. There are recurrent spot stains or lightly foxed areas, but the pages are, overall, unusually clean, with no fade to the lettering, no substantial stains, no page tears and few creases.
The binding is tight throughout, with no loose or missing pages.
