These are 14 volumes, uniformly numbered 308, from the Grolier Society’s undated edition de luxe of 1000 sets, of Beaux and Belles of England.
The particular titles are: Mrs. Robinson (1 volume); Beau Brummel (2 volumes); Mrs.Siddons (2 volumes); Lord Chesterfield (2 volumes); Lady Blessington (1 volume); Lady Hamilton and Lord Nelson (2 volumes); Nell Gwyn (1 volume); The Sheridans (2 volumes); and Count Grammont (1 volume). The covers ¾ red leather, marbled boards, 5 raised bands to the spine, with gilt lettering and design, are in very good overall condition, with the following flaws: 1) several upper edges of the spines show shallow wear, most notably to Mrs. Siddon (vol. 2) and Lady Blessington; 2) Beau Brummel (vol 1) has a stain to the spine and partial raising of the marbled surface of the back cover. All the covers (app. 6.25″x 9″) are securely connected to the insides.
The spines are straight and the gilt clearly legible. The marbled boards, excepting the above noted, are tightly attached. All are unfaded. The insides are also in very good condition. The main flaw is a group of pages, about the last 25, of Beau Brummel (vol. 1), apparently from the same stain as the back cover. This appears to be a water stain, and is most prominent to the last several pages. All the text is clearly legible there and throughout the 14 volumes.
The bindings are tight, with no loose or missing pages. The many illustrations are unfaded and clean, with no tears or other flaws, and with the tissue guards in place. All text, throughout the volumes is like new. There are no stamps or other attachments. There is no writing. The gilt page tops are bright and clean, as are the marbled inside cover spreads. I’ve found only two shallow edge spreads, neither of which nears the text.
The accompanying photos are of this set.
