This is the first English edition, printed for Benjamin Fisher in 1625, of Abraham Darcie’s translation from the french of Paul de Bellegent of William Camden’s biographical history, Annales, The True and Royall History of the Famous Empresse Elizabeth, Queene of England, France and Ireland, etc. True faith’s defendresse of divine renowne and happy memory: : Wherein all such memorable things as happened during hir blessed raigne, with such acts and treaties as past betwixt Hir Ma.tie and Scotland, France, Spaine, Italy, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Denmark, Russia, and the Netherlands, are exactly described. This has The French Epistle Dedicatory, The Epistle Dedicatory, A Preparation to the History and an extensive Table of Contents, Followed by Books I, II and III, covering the first through the thirtieth year of Elizabeth’s reign.
This copy does not have a frontispiece illustration of Elizabeth. This copy has been restored by Bayntun Binders (Bath), as indicated by their stamp at the base of the inside front cover, which has a leather spine and outside corners, marbled cloth boards, gilt lettering and decorations to the spine, which has five raised bands, and is straight and securely connected.
There are a number of edge tears, some close trimming, occasional small holes in the text, and some missing edge material and border repairs. There are recurrent stains, most of which are small. There are few prominent stains. Most pages have no substantial stains. The text and illustrations are unfaded.There are a number of margin notes, in ink, and an illegible signature at the base of the final body page (292). That page is followed with an unnumbered page “to the reader”, which is the final printed page.
