This is the stated second edition, by Millar (London), in 1755, of Edward Young’s, The Centaur Not Fabulous in Six Letters to a Friend, on The Life in Vogue (384 numbered pages), including the frontispiece.
This is in very good condition, with the full leather cover (app. 7.75″ x 5″) securely attached but with surface crackling, and with the spine scuffed. The gilt lettering and design has surface rubbing, with some lost material (see photo), but it’s bright overall, with the title lettering legible. The inside front cover has the Gardner bookplate – Valet Anchora Virtus. There are no other attachments.
There are a number of pencil notations to the end pages, but none to the body pages. The marbled inside cover spreads are clean and unfaded. The frontispiece is clean and unfaded, as are all body pages, on which the text is also clean and unfaded. The gilt page edges have a few scuffs but are bright overall. There are no page tears and no substantial creases. The binding is tight throughout, with no loose or missing pages.
The accompanying photos are accurate representations of this copy’s condition.
