This is the complete 4-volume first edition of Paul Hyppolite de M***’s novel, “Les Paradoxes du Capitaine Marc-Luc-Roch Barole”, published by Chez Levrault frères, dated 1802 and the year X of the french revolutionary calendar.
The four covers (app. 4″ x 6.5″), leather spines with gilt lettering, paper-surfaced marbled boards, have fade to the letter and shallow edge wear to the boards, but no significant stains, no looseness at the spine or to the boards. The lettering is faded. The ends of the spines have varying amounts of fraying, most shallow.
The first volume has a lengthy (lxiv) introduction, followed by 165 pages of body text. The following volumes have 213, 190 + 230 pages. Several pages have edge tears, with some material missing. None of this extends into the text. Almost all pages have no such flaws. There are no stamps or other attachments. There is no writing.
The bindings are tight throughout all volumes. There are recurrent small stains, but no prominent stains, and none of any kind to most pages. The text is uniformly unfaded and consistently legible.
