This is the complete 13 volume Biographical Edition of The Works of William Makepeace Thackeray, with illustrations by the author, published by Smith, Elder & Co. (London) in 1901-1902.
The covers (app. 5.5″ x 8″), have dark red leather spines, each with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering and decoration. There is shallow end wear to some, notably volume 7, and spots scuffs to a few, but no deep tears or notable fade. The gilt titles are clearly legible. The leather wrapped outside corners and red linen boards are securely attached, and show little fade, though there are a number of stains, most light. There is foxing to the page edges and several end pages, but almost no foxing, and no other stains, to any text or art page faces. The gilt page tops are faded and with surface scuffs, but good overall. The bindings are tight, with no loose or missing pages.
The many illustrations and all text are unfaded and clean. There are no stamps or other attachments. There are a few end page notations, but no writing to any text pages, and few notations anywhere.
The accompanying photos are accurate reflections of the book conditions.
